To support the mission of the BCIU, the Non-Public division strives to ensure optimal student growth through collaborative initiative, design and delivery of exemplary services.
At this time, more than 140 nonpublic schools in Bucks County are eligible to receive services for their students, and over 18,300 students in nonpublic schools benefit annually from these services.

Violence Prevention Programs

The Safe and Drug Free Department has a rich inventory of violence prevention programs for both students and educational staff. Prevention Specialists within the Intermediate Unit tailor these programs to the intended audience. Once the initial training has concluded, additional time is allotted for ongoing and enhanced support. Student Violence Prevention Programs: A wide range of violence prevention programs is offered to students in grades K - 12 in both public and non-public schools. The Prevention Specialist collaborates with the school principal and/or faculty/community members to identify specific needs and appropriate grade levels for the prevention programs. A sampling of the student programs include:

  • Peer Mediation (grades 4 - 12) - This 1 to 2 day interactive training can function as a start up or annual program to provide your school peer mediation teams with the tools necessary to function as effective peer mediators and conflict resolution role models in your school.
  • Anger Management/Conflict Resolution - This student program will walk participants through a process of identifying their style of anger/ conflict management, provide students with a discussion of healthy alternatives and a process for recognizing conflict as necessary, but manageable.
  • Tolerance/Diversity - A training tailored to meet the diverse population of your school may entail a blend of interactive curriculum, discussion and media. Content may encompass discussions of celebrating diversity, acknowledging personal biases, identifying stereotypes/ groups within your school and how they contribute to bullying and acts of violence.
  • Bullying Prevention - Bullying programs for students encompass a blend of interactive content and discussion to help students recognize the prevalence and types of bullying, the important role of the bystander, why bullying contributes to violence and how students can play a vital role in maintaining a bully free environment.

Staff Training on Violence Prevention Programs: Prevention Specialists within the Intermediate Unit are available to provide technical support, assistance and in-service training to administrators, teachers, and support staff on a wide variety of violence prevention topics. The Specialists are available for half day, full day or afterschool sessions. A sampling of the staff programs available include:

  • Raising Responsible Kids - Raising responsible students is difficult in this world where children are immersed in a "toxic culture." Using a combination of presentation, discussion and video (from the Parent to Parent curriculum) this program is designed to inform faculty of enabling vs. empowering parental behavior and how it plays a role in classroom behavior and management. Discussion will include practical strategies for working with parents to foster positive relationships and parenting practices.
  • Anger Management/Conflict Resolution - This program will walk participants through a process of identifying their style of anger/ conflict management, provide a discussion of healthy alternatives and a process for recognizing conflict as necessary, but manageable.
  • Peer Mediation - (for staff typically working with grades 4 - 12) This training can function as a start up or annual program to provide your school peer mediation team with the tools necessary to function as effective team leaders. Start up training includes consultation and a start up kit with tips on how to conduct an assessment of your school, promote your program and solicit support from vital staff members.
  • Bullying - This program welcomes faculty/advisors to come explore the world of bullying in schools. Bullying has always been around, but how people view this problem is evolving. This program explores this hot national issue and creative ways of implementing bullying prevention strategies in your classroom/school.
  • Tolerance/Diversity - A training tailored to meet the diverse population of your school may entail a blend of interactive curriculum, discussion and media. Content may encompass discussions of celebrating diversity, acknowledging personal biases, identifying stereotypes/ groups within your school and how they contribute to bullying and acts of violence.
