FAB LAB and PPE Face Shields

Anyone With 3-D Printers can Join Us in Making PPE Face Shields

With the COVID-19 virus spreading and schools closed, the Bucks IU Mobile FAB LAB was sitting idle with its specialized fabrication equipment.  As the virus spread and demand for personal protection equipment (PPE) grew louder, Dr. Lindsey Sides, Bucks IU Supervisor of STEAM Education, became aware of people using their 3-D printers and laser cutters to create face shields…a high demand PPE for first responders and hospital personnel.  With seven 3-D printers and a laser cutter from the FAB LAB, Dr. Sides immediately got started investigating how these could be put to use.  Along with Megan Boletta (Bucks IU FAB LAB Coordinator) designs were found and a prototype created.

With approval of the final design from the Bucks County Emergency Management Agency, we began production on April 3, 2020 (read about it here). Since then, the FAB LAB has produced over 400 face shields and provided them free of charge to the following organizations:

  • Bucks County EOC
  • Doylestown Hospital
  • St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children (read about it here)
  • Jefferson University Hospital
  • Abington Hospital

Demand is already overwhelming and we are expanding our operations. Our community has already begun to step up and help.  On Friday, April 17th over 400 pieces of face shields and materials were delivered to us to complete and distribute.

If you have 3-D printers or laser cutters (either is fine – you need not have both) we need you!  We can help you get started, we can assemble pieces from separate parties – in general we are ready to share and coordinate services so we can all be a part of helping our community in this fight.
