Supporting Students with Autism in Education

This 3 credit (90 Act 48 Hours) online course is offered through a partnership with Immaculata University. At registration, there is an option to add Immacuata University graduate credits for $600 in addition to the base fee.

With more students being diagnosed w/ Autism Spectrum disorders, it's important for educators to examine their perceptions & expand their knowledge base of this disability category.Time Frame: 6/16/2021-7/7/2021.
Session 1-Autism Spectrum:Examine the latest research from the National Institute of Mental Health on Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Session 2-Social Aspect of Autism:Explore the social idiosyncrasies of students with autism.
Modern movie portrayals of people with autism
Examine "The Social Code," a program to promote social inclusion
Social Stories

Session 3-Working with Students with Autism in your classroom:Research strategies & interventions to utilize in the classroom.
Multiple learning modalities
Promoting on task behavior
Defining teacher role vs. assistant role

Session 4-Setting your Classroom up for Success:Review teacher tested strategies for supporting students with autism.
Create calm classroom climate
Build positive relationships between home & school
Augmentative & alternative communication options

Session 5-Autism & the Law:Examine current case studies dealing w/ students w/ autism in the classroom.
Case studies of current legal cases
IEP development & IEP implementation
