Supporting Students with Autism in Education

This is a 3 credit (90 Act 48 Hrs) online course offered through a partnership w/ Immaculata University. At registration participants have the option to add Immaculata University graduate credit.Time Frame: 10/6/2021-10/27/2021

With more students being diagnosed w/ Autism Spectrum disorders, it's important for educators to examine their perceptions & expand their knowledge base of this disability category.
Session 1-Autism Spectrum:Examine the latest research
Aspergers
PDD-NOS
Autism

Session 2-Social Aspect of Autism:Explore the social idiosyncrasies of students with autism.
Movie portrayals of people with autism
Examine "The Social Code", a program to promote social inclusion
Social Stories

Session 3-Working with Students with Autism in the classroom:Research strategies & interventions to utilize.
Multiple learning modalities
Promoting on task behavior
Defining teacher role vs. assistant role
Routines

Session 4-Setting your Classroom up for Success:Review teacher tested strategies for supporting students with autism.
Create calm classroom climate
Build positive relationships between home & school
Augmentative & alternative communication options

Session 5-Autism & the Law:Examine current case studies dealing w/ students w/ autism in the classroom.
Case studies of current legal cases
IEP development & implementation

*The cost of the grad. credit is $600 ($200 per credit) in addition to the base fee for the course. Once the course starts the decision to add (or not) Immaculata credit is final. Upon successful conclusion of the course students will receive a transcript from Immaculata University.
